Our Data Methodology

Rates last updated: 2026-04-26

Transparency is the foundation of everything we publish. This page explains exactly how we collect, verify, and maintain the fixed deposit rate data on FD Rates Sri Lanka - so you can make informed decisions about how much to rely on the figures you see here.

Where Our Data Comes From

All FD rate data published on this website is sourced exclusively from publicly available, official information published by the banks and financial institutions themselves. Our primary sources are:

  • Official bank websites (rate schedule or FD product pages)
  • Publicly accessible bank rate notices and circulars
  • Rate information published in physical bank branches, where available
  • Direct verification calls to bank customer service lines for confirmation of online data

We do not rely on third-party aggregators, unofficial social media posts, or unverified sources. If a rate cannot be confirmed from an official bank source, it is not published on this site.

How We Check for Rate Changes

FD rates in Sri Lanka can change at any time - some banks update rates weekly, others monthly, and some in response to Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) monetary policy announcements. Our review process is structured around this reality:

  • Regular monitoring: We check the official rate pages of all covered banks on a regular basis, with higher frequency during periods of known monetary policy activity.
  • Post-CBSL review: Following each Monetary Policy Board decision by the Central Bank, we conduct an accelerated review of all bank rates to identify changes made in response to policy rate adjustments.
  • Reader reports: We welcome readers to report rate discrepancies via our contact page. Every report is investigated and the data is corrected if the reported rate is confirmed from an official source.

What the Displayed Rate Represents

All rates shown on this website are the gross annual interest rate as published by the bank, before the deduction of the 5% Withholding Tax (WHT) applicable to resident individual depositors. The rates are:

  • Per annum (annual) rates, not monthly rates
  • Applicable to the standard FD product at the stated tenure
  • Typically for deposits above the bank's stated minimum amount
  • For interest paid at maturity, unless noted as a monthly payout rate

Banks sometimes offer different rates for different deposit amount tiers (for example, a higher rate for deposits above Rs. 5,000,000). Where we are aware of such tiers, we display the rate applicable to the most common deposit range and note the variation.

Which Banks We Cover

We cover licensed commercial banks and licensed specialised banks regulated by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Our current coverage includes all major state-owned banks (BOC, NSB, People's Bank) and the largest private sector licensed commercial banks. We prioritise institutions that publish their rates clearly on official online channels.

We do not currently cover all licensed finance companies (LFCs), as their rate publishing practices vary significantly. Where LFC data is included, it is clearly labelled and we recommend readers exercise additional diligence given the different risk profile of these institutions.

Known Limitations

Despite our best efforts to maintain accurate data, there are inherent limitations users should be aware of:

  • Banks can change rates with immediate effect, meaning there may be a lag between a bank updating its rate and our database reflecting the change.
  • Some banks do not publish all tenure rates online, and in these cases our data may be incomplete for those tenures.
  • Promotional or special rates offered to specific customer segments (senior citizens, salary account holders, etc.) may not always be captured in the standard rate tables.
  • Online published rates may occasionally differ from rates offered at specific branches - always confirm the rate with your branch or relationship manager before finalising a deposit.

Our Accuracy Commitment

We are committed to publishing data that is as accurate as possible within the constraints described above. We do not manufacture, estimate, or interpolate rates - if a rate is not confirmed from an official source, it does not appear on the site.

If you find a rate on our site that differs from what your bank is currently offering, please report it via our contact page. We investigate and correct confirmed discrepancies promptly.

Final Verification Recommendation

This website is a starting point for research and comparison, not a substitute for direct verification with your bank. Before opening or renewing any fixed deposit, confirm the current rate, terms, and conditions directly with the institution - either in person, by phone, or through the bank's official digital channel. Banks are the authoritative source of their own rate data; we are a convenient aggregator and comparison tool.
